Faculty Honors

Researchers at the University of Maryland Institute of Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS) are some of the top experts in computing. UMIACS research and scholarship has been recognized with numerous prestigious honors.

	National Academies of Sciences and Engineering Election to the National Academies of Sciences or Engineering is one of the highest forms of recognition in academia for notable accomplishments in research, practice and education, or for making major advances in a specific discipline.
	CAREER Awards The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program is the National Science Foundation’s most prestigious award in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of education and research within the context of their organization’s mission.
	PECASE Awards The Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) honors and supports extraordinary achievements of the finest scientists and engineers who, while early in their research careers, show exceptional potential for leadership at the frontiers of scientific knowledge during the 21st century.
	ACM Fellows The Association for Computing Machinery recognizes the top one percent of its membership with the designation of Fellow, honoring a member’s outstanding accomplishments in computing and information technology, and/or outstanding service to ACM and the larger computing community.
	ACM Distinguished Member Grade The Distinguished Member Grade recognizes those ACM members with at least 15 years of professional experience and 5 years of continuous professional membership who have achieved significant accomplishments or have made a significant impact on the computing field.
	AAAS Fellows The American Association for Advancement recognizes members that have made significant contributions to research, teaching or technology, or that have provided exemplary services to professional societies, administration in academe, industry, and government, or in communicating and interpreting science to the public.

	IEEE Fellows Being named an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Fellow is a distinction reserved for select IEEE members. The total number selected in any one year does not exceed one-tenth of one percent of the total voting IEEE membership. The award recognizes those whose extraordinary accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest are deemed fitting of this prestigious grade elevation.
	IAPR Fellows The International Association for Pattern Recognition Fellow Award is biennially conferred on persons to acknowledge their distinguished contributions to the field of pattern recognition and to IAPR activities. Both service to IAPR and scientific contributions to the field of pattern recognition are taken into account in the selection process.
	AAAI Fellows The Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence's Fellows program was started in 1990 to recognize individuals who have made significant, sustained contributions—usually over at least a 10-year period—to the field of artificial intelligence.
	SIAM Fellows The Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics Fellowship honors SIAM members who are recognized by their peers as distinguished for their contributions to the discipline.
	Sloan Fellows The Sloan Research Fellowships seek to stimulate fundamental research by early-career scientists and scholars of outstanding promise. These two-year fellowships are awarded yearly to 126 researchers in recognition of distinguished performance and a unique potential to make substantial contributions to their field.
	ACL Fellows The Association for Computational Linguistics Fellows program was established in 2011 to recognize ACL members whose contributions to the field have been most extraordinary. To be named a Fellow, a candidate must have been a member of the ACL for the past three consecutive years and be nominated by a current ACL member.
